Woman Who Attempted to Drive Vehicle into Hudson River with Two-Year-Old Child on Her Lap Arrested

Albany, NY

ALBANY, NY – A 23-year-old Albany woman is facing charges after her vehicle was found feet from plunging into the Hudson River with her two-year-old child on her lap.

On Saturday, May 6, 2023 around 5:00 a.m., Albany police officers responded to the boat launch located at 20 Quay Street for reports that an occupied vehicle appeared to be entering the water. Upon arrival, officers located a sedan stuck on the curb near the boat launch and merely feet from entering the river. A woman and her two-year-old child were also located in the vehicle.

Through investigation, it was determined by Albany detectives that the driver was involved in a domestic related incident prior to the incident and drove her vehicle towards the river with the child on her lap. Thankfully, the car became stuck on the curb and did not enter the water.

The child was evaluated by emergency medical personnel and found to be in good health. He was turned over to a family member.

The driver, Santisha Lopez, was taken into custody at the scene and subsequently charged with one count of Attempted Murder 2nd and one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

She was arraigned Saturday morning in Albany City Criminal Court and remanded to the Albany County Jail.
