Arrest Made in Washington Park Robbery Attempt
ALBANY, NY – A 16-year-old Albany resident who attempted to steal a cell phone from a man at knife point Monday morning in Washington Park was arrested.
On Friday, April 15, 2022 around 8:30 a.m., officers responded to Washington Park for reports of a male chasing another male through the park with a knife in their hand. Upon arrival, officers learned that suspect approached the victim armed with a knife and demanded his cell phone. The victim refused to turn over the phone and began to run away from the suspect.
Shortly after the call, a police officer with the State University at Albany Police Department who was nearby, observed a male who matched the description of the suspect near the intersection of Robin Street and Western Avenue and stopped him as part of the investigation. The suspect was ultimately identified as the suspect in the robbery and taken into custody by Albany police officers. He was also found to be in possession of several knives.
The 16-year-old, whose name will not be released due to his age, has been charged with one count of Attempted Robbery 1st and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th.
He was arraigned in Albany County Family Court and remanded to the Albany County Juvenile Detention Facility pending further court proceedings.
